Veneers are a long-lasting cosmetic treatment. In fact, they may endure for well over 10 – 15 years. However, they do eventually come to the end of their lifespan. Is it time to replace your veneers? This blog post discusses five signs that you should ask your cosmetic dentist about getting an upgrade.

Your Veneers Are Darkening

Veneers are usually made of porcelain, a nonporous substance that is highly resistant to stains and discoloration. However, veneers can still lose their original beauty over time. For example, the bonding material beneath them might become discolored. Or, your veneers might get scratched, and pigments can start to collect in those scratches.

In some cases, it is possible to restore the appearance of discolored veneers, but more often, replacement is the better option.

Your Veneers Are Damaged

Veneers are impressively durable, but they can still incur wear and tear over time. Chips and cracks are especially likely to occur if you bite your fingernails, chew on ice, or have other bad habits that could lead to damage. If your veneers are obviously not in great shape, it may be time to ask your cosmetic dentist to replace them.

You Are Experiencing Oral Health Problems

Veneers are not susceptible to cavities. However, the teeth that support them remain as vulnerable as ever to decay. Even if you have good oral hygiene habits, there is always a small chance that you will develop cavities or gum disease. Your dentist might need to remove your veneers in order to provide necessary treatment. Later, once your oral health has been restored, it may be possible to spruce up your smile with new veneers.

You Want to Change Your Look

Your veneers and the teeth beneath them may be in relatively good shape. However, perhaps you no longer like the way they look. This sometimes happens with individuals who get veneers at a young age. Often, younger individuals choose bright white veneers. As they age, though, they might discover that they would prefer a softer, subtler look.

Of course, the decision to replace your veneers for purely aesthetic reasons should not be made lightly. Your dentist can help you understand the pros and cons of your treatment options.

You Are Unhappy with Your Veneers

The vast majority of dentists who place veneers are committed to excellence. However, they are not immune to human error. Occasionally, mistakes happen that have a negative effect on the outcome of a cosmetic treatment. If you have concerns about the quality of your veneers, it may be best to get them replaced.

Is it time to replace your veneers? Your dentist will be happy to help you decide!
